There are a few interesting things to see from these plots from the gems per game plot, we can see that the new traditional drafts offer the easiest possible opportunity to go infinite, with going infinite happening at a game win rate of around 64% (down from around 66% with the old traditional drafts). In that case, you're interested in packs per game, gems per game, or packs per game (converting all extra gems to packs). Okay, but what if you're already such a good player that you're going to go infinite, or you're just in a really big hurry to get stuff? You're not interested in spending a lot of time playing limited, you just want to accumulate packs and gems as fast as possible in as few games as possible. Also note that quick drafts are better than the store according to this metric even if your winrate is very low (this is assuming you're buying packs with gems at the best rate). Indeed, according to this metric, the new traditional drafts are more generous than the old ones at pretty much any winrate. As you can see, quick drafts are once again best until your winrate hits about 55%, at which point new traditional drafts are best.

Note that, for simplicity, I'm including the three "packs" that you draft over the course of the draft itself, even though of course they have slightly different properties from the "packs" you win. Here's the plot that compares each draft type according to that metric. What if, rather than getting to play lots of games of limited, you care about growing your collection for constructed as efficiently as possible, given a limited supply of gems? Then you care about packs per kilogem. Note, of course, that your games per gem head towards infinity as your winrate increases and you approach the point that you can "go infinite." Of course, those are no longer available, so today quick drafts are best until your winrate hits about 58%, at which point new traditional drafts are best. As you can see, quick drafts are the best by a decent amount until your winrate hits about 55%, at which point old traditional drafts were best. In that case, you're looking to maximize games per kilogem. Let's start by supposing that you're a budget limited player, and you just want to play as many games of limited as possible before you're forced to either pay money or grind for more coins. Obviously, that depends on what you, as a player, care about. That plot on its own is hard to interpret, though, and doesn't easily tell us what drafts are best. I've included both the old and new styles of traditional draft, so we can compare them the old traditional draft is the one that is 5 wins or 2 losses in Bo3, and the new one is the one that's just 3 matches of Bo3.

So first, here's the big plot that shows how much of each thing (kilogems, packs, games) each draft type gives you, as a function of your winrate. For example, a "winrate of 55%" corresponds to a game winrate of 55%, or a Bo3 match winrate of around 57.5%. Similarly, when I talk about your winrate, I'm talking about your *game* winrate (to keep things consistent across modes). When I measure games, I'm talking individual games, not matches (I do the conversion in Bo3, where a match corresponds to between 2 and 2.5 games on average, depending on your winrate). For example, if on average a draft gives you 4 packs and -0.5 kilogems, we can say that doing that draft gives you 8 packs per kilogem. The interesting analysis consists of considering how many of one thing you get per another thing you spend. To keep everything on approximately the same scale, I'm measuring gems in terms of kilogems (one kilogem = 1000 gems). Obviously, "generosity" is tricky and is dependent on what exactly you, as a player, care about, so I've done my best to be detailed.įirst, of all, my terminology: each draft you sign up for gives you some number of gems, packs, and games. When MtG Arena switched from having the old Traditional Drafts, which let you play until 5 wins or 2 losses in Bo3, to having the new system with 3 matches of Bo3, a Bo1 Premier draft, or a Quick Draft, I became curious as to whether the new system was more generous or less.
